Summer in Altea is more than sunshine and sea. Tucked between the mountains and the turquoise waters of the Costa Blanca, this whitewashed village sits on the Alicante coast. It offers a slower, softer rhythm. Consequently, it invites you to breathe differently, move with intention, and reconnect with what actually matters. This summer, instead of just switching off, why not tune in?
A Inspira Altea, we believe that wellbeing is not a luxury add-on to your holiday — it’s the whole point of it. You might be visiting for a week or spending the whole summer along the Costa Blanca. Either way, Altea is one of the finest stages in Spain for outdoor yoga, Ayurvedic bodywork, and mountain hiking. Read on for an honest, lived-in guide to experiencing this corner of Alicante at its very best.
Hiking in Altea & the Costa Blanca Mountains
Few places in Europe offer such a dramatic contrast between coast and sierra as the Marina Baixa. This is the beautiful comarca that Altea calls home. Step off the beach and enjoy a mountain trail within twenty minutes. From there, you can see the Mediterranean glittering far below. Summer mornings, before the heat of the day sets in, are made for this.
Our most popular guided experience is Senderisme, Ioga i Tapes Altea. Specifically, it combines a coastal or mountain trail with an outdoor yoga session. Afterward, you will enjoy a stop at a local spot for post-hike refreshment. It’s a perfect half-day for couples, solo travellers, or small groups who want more than a beach towel.
If you are ready to go deeper, look at our Retir de Ioga a Altea. This option pairs a full Hatha Yoga session with a guided six-hour hike into the Valle de Guadalest. Indeed, it is one of the most scenic valleys in the whole province. It’s challenging, it’s beautiful, and it stays with you long after you’ve gone home.
Early risers shouldn’t miss the Experiència a la muntanya Sunrise. Watching the light spill across the Costa Blanca from a summit before the rest of the world wakes up is incredible. This is truly one of those moments that resets something inside you.
Outdoor spots to explore on your own
Fuentes del Algar — Drive twenty minutes inland from Altea to find this stunning spot. It features a series of natural waterfalls and emerald pools near Callosa d’en Sarrià. As a result, it is one of the most beloved natural escapes in the province. It is ideal for cooling off on a hot summer afternoon. Furthermore, you can combine it with a visit to the medieval village of Guadalest. This village sits perched impossibly on a rocky crag just above.
Cala Mascarat — This striking cove is a short drive south of Altea towards Calpe. It sits beautifully beneath limestone cliffs and offers deep, clear water. Arrive early in summer because it fills up by mid-morning. The walk down from the road is short but dramatic.
Vía Ferrata del Ponoig — The Ponoig mountain looms above Polop de la Marina, visible from much of the Marina Baixa. In addition, its vía ferrata route offers a genuine adventure for anyone with a head for heights and basic ferrata experience. The views from the top are truly extraordinary. For example, you can see the whole coast from Benidorm to Calpe spread out below you. Check the active tourism section of LinkAlicante for more summer excursion ideas around the province.
🧘 Yoga in Altea — Practice Where the Light Is Different
There is something about practising yoga by the Mediterranean that no studio can replicate. The quality of the light, the salt in the air, and the morning sound of cicadas are unique. Ultimately, it all becomes a part of your practice. At Inspire Altea, we bring yoga outdoors whenever possible. For instance, we practice on the beach, on old town terraces, in shaded mountain clearings, or on private sea-view terraces.
El nostre Classes de Ioga en Grup a Altea run throughout summer with flexible scheduling. This is perfect if you want to drop in for a week rather than commit to a fixed timetable. Sessions start from €16 with the current summer offer.
However, if you prefer something tailored, you can book Private Yoga Classes (1:1 & Small Groups). These can be arranged at any time and location, such as your villa terrace or a quiet cala. Additionally, athletes and active people benefit from our dedicated Ioga per a atletes i rendiment sessions. These focus primarily on mobility, breath, and recovery.
For nomads, expats, and longer-stay visitors, the Weekly Yoga Pass is highly recommended. It offers the most flexible way to keep a consistent practice while you are here. Choose anything from a single week to a full season, with options to suit every schedule.
Want to combine it all? The Cap de setmana de rejoveniment brings together yoga, Ayurvedic massage, and hiking. It combines these with Altea’s natural environment into a curated two-day reset. Consequently, it is one of our most complete summer offerings.
Where we love to practise outdoors
First, enjoy the Passeig Marítim de Altea in the early morning before the promenade fills with families. Second, visit the viewpoints in the old town (El Fornet) to look out over the blue domes. You can also explore Platja del Albir at the foot of the Serra Gelada Natural Park just before sunrise. Finally, if you stay inland, the Valle de Guadalest provides a cooler setting that feels a world away.
🌿 Ayurvedic Massage in Altea — Ancient Healing by the Sea
Yoga moves the body; massage listens to it. Ayurveda is a five-thousand-year-old Indian system of medicine and wellbeing. Crucially, it treats massage as a fundamental act of self-care rather than a luxury. It works directly with the nervous system, lymph, and vital energy instead of just treating muscles.
Our Core Massage Treatments
Our most requested treatment is the Massatge corporal complet Abhyangam. It uses warm medicated oils and long, rhythmic strokes to deeply nourish the tissues and calm the mind. Therefore, after a few days of sun, swimming, and mountain trails, there is nothing quite like it.
Additionally, for something more targeted, the Massatge esportiu addresses muscle tension. It relieves fatigue accumulated through physical activity, making it ideal after a hike or an intense training week. Similarly, the Massatge Kalari is rooted in the South Indian martial art Kalarippayattu. It works on the energy channels of the body with a firm, focused technique unlike Western bodywork.
For the face and head, the Massatge Celestial is deeply calming. This treatment addresses tension held in the jaw, neck, and scalp. As a result, it often produces a profound sense of mental stillness. Furthermore, the Reflexologia podal índia session works through reflex points on the feet to release tension throughout the whole body.
Ayurvedic Consultations & Mobile Services
Are you new to Ayurveda? If so, you might want to understand your constitution to see what serves you best this summer. You can start with a Consulta única d'Ayurveda. This is a helpful one-to-one conversation. Specifically, it helps you identify your dominant dosha and build a personalised approach to diet, routine, and treatment.
Finally, treatments can be offered at our space in Altea or directly at your accommodation. Please get in touch to arrange a session wherever you’re staying.
🏡 Where to Stay: Our Favourite Places Around Altea
Part of what makes a wellness holiday work is the right place to land at the end of the day. Consequently, here are three accommodations in the area that we know personally and can recommend with confidence.
Oodles Retreat — Benissa
Oodles Retreat is a beautifully designed boutique space built around rest, nature, and conscious living. It is nestled in the hills above Benissa, between Calpe and Moraira. The pool and gardens overlook the mountains towards the sea. In fact, I collaborate with Oodles as their Ayurvedic massage therapist. Therefore, if you’re staying here, you can book a treatment right on the property. It remains a genuinely special place.
Casa Confianza — Confrides (near Guadalest)
Casa Confianza sits in the mountain village of Confrides. It is located in the shadow of the Serrella range and just a short drive from the Guadalest reservoir. Indeed, it is the kind of place that slows you down simply by existing. It offers historic stone walls, cool mountain air, and complete stillness. Thus, it is perfect as a base for inland hikes, and a world away from the summer crowds on the coast. If you want genuine rural tranquillity in the Marina Baixa, this is it.
Hotel Ábaco — Altea Centro
Right in the heart of Altea, Hotel Ábaco is a charming boutique hotel run by Adelina. She is a warm, attentive host. Furthermore, she has made it one of the most welcoming places to stay in town. The location couldn’t be better. For instance, it is within walking distance from the old town, the seafront promenade, the market, and the restaurants. Ultimately, if you want to be in the centre of Altea’s summer life without sacrificing comfort, Hotel Ábaco is the answer.
☀️ Local Summer Plans — What to Do Between Sessions
A wellbeing holiday isn’t just about structured activities. Instead, half the magic is in the unhurried moments. For example, think of a market bag heavy with peaches, a post-yoga coffee, or an afternoon swim with no agenda. Here’s what we love about summer life in and around Altea.
The Altea Tuesday Market
Every Tuesday morning, the weekly outdoor market sets up along the Altea promenade. It also expands into the surrounding streets. Here you will find fresh produce, local honey, ceramics, and textiles. It provides the general pleasurable chaos of a proper Mediterranean market. Therefore, arrive before 10am to beat the heat and catch the best selection. Ultimately, it is one of those rituals that makes you feel like a local.
Mercado de Interior — Monday to Saturday
For everyday fresh produce, Altea’s indoor market is open Monday to Saturday. Consequently, it is the perfect place to shop like you actually live here. You can buy local fruit and vegetables, fish from the morning catch, charcuterie, and fresh bread. It offers a quiet, unhurried rhythm that feels like the opposite of a supermarket.
Tienda Bio — Centro Altea (Raúl)
Another favourite spot is a small organic food shop in the centre of Altea. This shop is run by Raúl, who knows his products in depth. He has built a beautifully curated range of natural foods and supplements. It’s the kind of shop that exists in every great Mediterranean town. You will immediately want to tell everyone about it.
Fuentes del Algar & Guadalest
It is worth repeating that the Fuentes del Algar waterfalls and natural pools are wonderful. Indeed, they are one of the great summer pleasures of inland Alicante. Combine them with a visit to Guadalest, the impossibly picturesque hill village perched above its reservoir. As a result, you have a near-perfect day out from Altea. Both are around 25 minutes by car. Additionally, for a guided version, check the excursion options listed on LinkAlicante’s active tourism section.
Cala Mascarat
Cala Mascarat is located just south of Altea where the coast turns towards Calpe. Notably, it is one of the most visually striking spots on the whole Costa Blanca. The cove is narrow and hemmed by vertical white limestone. Furthermore, the water is intensely clear and deep blue-green. Therefore, it rewards an early start and a slow morning swim. On the way back, stop in the old fishermen’s quarter of Altea port. Enjoy a hot coffee and take a look at the beautiful boats.
Vía Ferrata del Ponoig
For those with a taste for adventure, the Vía Ferrata del Ponoig is a genuine highlight of the province. It is located at Polop de la Marina. The route climbs the striking limestone buttresses of the Ponoig peak. Thanks to fixed iron equipment, it is accessible to anyone with basic experience and a good head for heights. The views from the ridge are among the best in the Marina Baixa. Specifically, you can see the sea on one side and mountains on the other. Helmets and harnesses are essential. Fortunately, guided options are available through local outdoor companies featured on LinkAlicante.
